PROTECT THE PRESS
The high cost of living is now the biggest topic being discussed by many Kenyans. The voice of the majority of Kenyans who are less privileged, raises every time elected leaders fail to listen to the Citizen's and expectations.
Here is when the Media plays an important role of echoing the voice of the many Kenyans that are poor and affected by the rising cost of living. The media ensures that the voice of the citizens is hard by the leaders and their cry is worked on to.
However the media also acts as a watchdog of the government, The role of the media in any society is to investigate and share information and ideas, in particular on issues of public interest, so that the public is informed and able to play their part in political, economic and cultural life, it ensures proper utilization of resources, disclosing corruption scandals among other roles. This shows that the contribution of the Press towards the success of the nation can never be ignored.
Recently in Kenya, there have been hindrances to press freedom, surprisingly caused by the government side and Kenya's constitution includes protections for freedom of expression and of the press. The country's media provide critical reporting and a diversity of views. Although guaranteed by the constitution, respect for press freedom and free expression in Kenya are constrained by political and economic realities.
The current political administration that came to power regularly claims that the media are biased against them. Physical attacks on the Media and the increase in online threats, harassment, and intimidation have had a chilling effect to press freedom.
In a situation when press freedom is attacked, all of our rights are in danger. It is imperative, now more than ever, that this fundamental pillar of democracy be protected, so that grassroots activists and journalists everywhere can continue speaking truth to power. When issues are raised on the table, those on power should work on the raised matters that creating a war that endanger the fundamental rights of the citizens that have no voice.
The media and government of Kenya should work together in ensuring that Kenyan's Life are better through a good relation between the two so that we will have a brighter future for our Nation.
